What is Ti Thong? (ตีทอง)

Ti Thong (ตีทอง) is one type of goldsmith craftsmanship — the one who creates gold leaf made from 22K or 99.99% pure gold, which was once prosperous during the Rattanakosin period.

Creating gold leaf requires over 20,000 times of continuous hammering over 5 hours. Because of the perseverance and dedication required, only a few factories carry on this tradition until today. Nevertheless, gold leaf remains widely used in the beauty, food, and health industries.

The traditional use of gold leaf is to adhere to Buddha statues, high-class handicrafts such as Dharma cabinets, carved woodwork, holiness decorations, fine pieces of furniture, and the historic Chonlamark Royal Barge.
